The state of NRW is supporting the research project :metabolon with 7.287 million € in order to gain power from organic waste. Prof. Dr. Bongards (Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Institute for Automation & Industrial IT, Gummersbach) will take over the project leading together with Mrs. Lichtinghagen-Wirths, BAV (Bergischer Abfallwirtschaftverband). They will create a research and competence-center on the landfill Leppe, in which scientists examine the various methods of generating energy from organic waste.
Within the scope of the research project about 14 jobs are created for scientific staff. In addition, a hall is established at the landfill, in the pilot's arrangements - including the necessary test equipment and laboratories - will be available. At the end of the test phase about seven million kilowatt hours stream should be generated from 55,000 metric tons of organic waste per year. This allows 1,600 homes to be supplied with electricity for one year.
