The first: metabolon-summercamp - under the title "resource management" - took place from the 22nd to the 25.7.2013th at the teaching and research center of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Students of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and the University of Applied Sciences in Bingen worked here together in interdisciplinary workshops. The twelve participants who came from the fields of natural science, environmental science as well as renewable energy and automation technology received insights into the topical research subjects on :metabolon at three different research stations. The subjects to be treated were: 1) Image processing and image analysis in the research boiler, 2) Efficiency analysis of various reduction systems at the pellet mill and 3) Biological nitrogen removal and biomass characterization at the research reactor.
Besides, the participants got to know the new plants of the teaching and research centre and also carried out their attempts in these. "Our site is characterized by the good research possibilities in industrial or pilot plants, which are available to students in this form and number probably rare," emphasizes Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Bongards, the scientific leader of the :metabolon-project. "The good cooperation between the three Cologne institutes was the basis for the implementation of this summercamp and offered us the opportunity to carry out series of experiments in three completely different areas. Our aim was to demonstrate the participants the different research directions at :metabolon and also to take them into contact with previously unknown issues."
