The first: metabolon-summercamp - under the title "resource management" - took place from the 22nd to the 25.7.2013th at the teaching and research center of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences. Students of the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and the University of Applied Sciences in Bingen worked here together in interdisciplinary workshops. The twelve participants who came from the fields of natural science, environmental science as well as renewable energy and automation technology received insights into the topical research subjects on :metabolon at three different research stations. The subjects to be treated were: 1) Image processing and image analysis in the research boiler, 2) Efficiency analysis of various reduction systems at the pellet mill and 3) Biological nitrogen removal and biomass characterization at the research reactor. Juni 2013: 2-month research stay in Japan
GECO►C employee, Thomas Ludwig, M.Eng., will study for two months in Japan, from June till August. In the context of his doctoral thesis, Mr. Ludwig has applied for a DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) scholarship to get a short grant at a Japanese university for the realisation of a two-month research stay. The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) gives young scientists not only the opportunity to explore on selected topics, but the researcher also receive insights into the language and the culture of the country of the rising sun. 29.05.2013: Second Ph.D. in Irish elite university
With Dr. Christian Wolf the second employee of the research team GECO►C has already completed his doctoral thesis in cooperation with the Irish University Maynooth successfully. The defense of the thesis ["Simulation, Optimization and Instrumentation of agricultural Biogas Plants"] took place in Ireland on 5-16-2013. "The examination was quite exhausting", said Dr. Christian Wolf afterwards. "Especially when one has dealt with a topic for years, then there are - of course - a huge number of little things at which the examiners can stop. And furthermore, I wanted to sell myself as well as possible." The Magdeburg simulation developers invited already to the 20th time for her annual SIMBA meeting and offered this time again a Workshop with the subject "Control, Regulation and Simulation of biogas arrangements". Professor Dr. Michael Bongards led the members of the CUAS sponsoring association about the Leppe landfill, on which the Cologne University of Applied Sciences has opened a teaching and competence center within the scope of the renowed :metabolon project. In this regard, he showed the representatives of the regional business enterprises exactly in which direction the scientist search at the Leppe landfill and which equipment they have up to now. Espacially the big boiler for wood chips impressed the members of the sponsoring association: Herewith a whole hospital can be heated without problems. 23.-25.04.2013: International Conference for waste treatment in Europe at the Campus Gummersbach
Professor Bongards and his research group GECO►C have arranged the 3-day conference in the framework of the EU project "RENEW - Resource Innovation Network for European Waste" at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Campus Gummersbach. On this occasion, about 50 participants from Belgium, Germany and Ireland discussed the possibilities of the raw material recovery from waste. RENEW had been judged among 20 applications from different EU countries as the second best project application and is promoted with 2.4 million euros until June 2015. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kranert was the leader of the 3rd Science Congress "Waste and Resource Management" which took place at the University of Stuttgart in March 2013. Almost one hundred participants heard lectures of 22 speakers on the topics plastic utilization, biological processes, international waste and resource economy, recycling as well as thermal utilization and logistics. The E-World 2013 could show an increase of the number of visitors about 7 percent more, in spite of the shortened duration by one day. 16.09.2012: Open Day at :metabolon
Following the excellent opening - almost exactly one year ago - this year's "Open Day" also became a huge success. "Once again we have been lucky with the weather", Prof. Bongards, as research leader of the project :metabolon, was pleased. With about 7000 guests came considerably more people to Lindlar than the BAV (Bergische waste trade association), the operator of the former landfill on the Leppe site, had imagined it. Especially the colorful supporting program pulled the visitors from the nearer and wider surroundings to Lindlar: Besides the research many regional suppliers as well as the "Bergisches Energy Competence Center" presented themselves. August 2012: Research at the base
Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Ludwig, member of the research group GECO►C,completed in preparation for his dissertation, a 1-week internship at the "Residenz Ambiente", an assisted-living home with integrated nursing. "Beside the practical insights concerning the contact with the patients as well as their needs, I have gained especially many human impressions," the researcher sums up. "With our experience in sensor technology, we have very good points in this area. However, it is important, that the human with his needs must be in the foreground", emphasizes Prof. Bongards as head of the scientific working group.
22.06.2012: Prof. Bongards becomes Honorary Professor in Kyrgyzstan
The 1-day visit of Prof. Talant Ryspaev, the dean of the german-kyrgyz faculty at the Kyrgyz State Technical University, and his staff Mrs. Venera Baichekirova began to Prof. Bongards, head of the working group GECO ? C, with a surprise. Thanks to his long-standing engagement in Kyrgyzstan and his perpetual interest in the advancement of scientific cooperation between the Cologne University of Applied Sciences and the KSTU in Kyrgyzstan, Prof. Bongards was appointed honorary professor.
13.06.2012: Commissioning of pellet mill on the Leppe
The research work on the site of the former Leppe landfill has received a further main pillar. With the commissioning of the pellet mill of the Kahl company, the employees of the Cologne institute for agricultural engineering and renewable energies get started right now. In this context the team of GECOC will be responsible for the data acquisition and processing. UEFA Euro 2012: GECO►C typing for a good purpose
Since 2002, the Leverkusen-based association "We help Children" organizes a biennial betting game to World and European Championships. With it all preliminary round matches as well as the quarter, semi-finalists and, of course, the European or World Champions will be typed. The Federation of German Landscape Architects NRW appreciates outstanding achievements in the field of landscape architecture, park and garden design. 2012 the 4-member jury gave one of 27 candidates the first prize and awarded also four tributes. One of those tributes received the Düsseldorf office FSWLA for plans for the Regional 2010 project :metabolon. The implementation of the unusual concept of landscaping on the former landfill site has been found attention far beyond the region.
22.3.2012: Aggerverband distinguished theses of GECO►C staff
The regional water supply company Aggerverband awarded it's annually awards for excellent theses at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences this year was it at the nationwide "Day of Water'. Therewith were two master theses received which were written by members of the Working Group GECO►C: Mr. Vitali Dercho get the second place with his thesis ("Development and testing of a control system for optimization of sewer flushing"), which he had tested at the wastewater treatment plant in Wetzlar. The further reduction in demand for drinking water can cause deposits in the sewer system, making sewer flushing necessary. In particularly vulnerable sections of the sewer the flushing can be done by automated channel shields, which can caused intermittent loads at the wastewater treatment plant. [...]

Innovation was the major criterion for evaluating the best thesis by the Opitz CONSULTING GmbH from Gummersbach. Thomas Ludwig, a member of the GECOC working group at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences, Campus Gummersbach, was honored for his master thesis with the first place. In the scope of his thesis "Proof of Concept and Prototype Development of an Integration Infrastructure for Self-Organizing Wireless Sensor Networks in conjunction with an ERP system (SAP)" Mr. Ludwig was concerned with the cross linking of wireless sensors and the subsequent treatment of grasped data in the standard operating software SAP. Lindlar, the representatives of six Regionale 2010-projects, so called :gardens of technology, signed an arrangement which shows their willingness to further cooperation after the official period of validity.
